Indian Premier League witnessed the arrival of a new star as Cooper Connolly lit up the stage with a stunning debut performance, guiding Punjab Kings to a tense three-wicket victory over Gujarat Titans at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Stadium on Tuesday.
Chasing 163, Punjab’s innings revolved around Connolly’s fearless unbeaten 72 off 44 balls, an effort that combined composure with aggression. The 22-year-old Australian wasted no time settling in, striking five boundaries and five sixes to anchor the chase in style.
He found strong support from Prabhsimran Singh, who chipped in with a brisk 37 off 24 deliveries. The duo stitched together a crucial 76-run partnership for the second wicket, putting Punjab firmly in control of the chase.
However, the match took a dramatic turn as Gujarat triggered a collapse. From a comfortable 83 for one, Punjab suddenly stumbled to 118 for six, losing wickets in quick succession and giving the opposition a glimmer of hope.
Amid the chaos, Connolly held his nerve. Showing maturity beyond his years, he steadied the innings and ensured there were no further hiccups. With just five balls to spare, he sealed the victory in emphatic fashion, striking a boundary off Washington Sundar to complete a memorable debut.
Earlier, Punjab’s bowlers laid the foundation for the win with a disciplined effort. Veteran leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal led the charge with figures of two for 28, weaving a web around Gujarat’s batting lineup. His victims included captain Shubman Gill, who was deceived by a clever variation.
Pacers Marco Jansen and Vyshak Vijaykumar also played key roles, restricting Gujarat to 162 for six. Vyshak, in particular, impressed with three wickets, justifying his selection.
Despite contributions from the likes of Jos Buttler, Gujarat never quite broke free, as Punjab’s bowlers kept things tight throughout.
In the end, it was Connolly’s night—a debut defined by fearless strokeplay and calm finishing. For Punjab Kings, it marked a winning start to the season, while for Connolly, it was the perfect introduction to one of cricket’s biggest stages.
