Punjab Kings continued their dream run in the Indian Premier League, securing a commanding 54-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium on Sunday. The emphatic result keeps Punjab firmly at the top of the standings, still unbeaten this season.
The match was defined by a stunning batting display from Priyansh Arya and Cooper Connolly, whose explosive 182-run partnership off just 80 balls for the second wicket powered Punjab to a massive total of 254 for seven — the highest score recorded in the league this season.
After being put in to bat, Punjab suffered an early setback when Prabhsimran Singh fell in the opening over to Mohammed Shami. However, what followed was complete domination. Connolly initially played a supporting role but soon found his rhythm, reaching a brisk half-century off 35 deliveries. Priyansh, meanwhile, was relentless from the outset, racing to his fifty in just 19 balls and dismantling the opposition attack with fearless stroke play.
The defining moment of the innings came in a brutal over bowled by Aiden Markram, which went for 32 runs and included five towering sixes. By the 13th over, Punjab had surged to 179 for one, effectively putting the game beyond reach. Although Prince Yadav and M. Siddharth managed to dismiss Connolly and Priyansh in quick succession, the damage had already been done.
Chasing 255, Lucknow started brightly, reaching 61 without loss inside six overs. The promotion of Ayush Badoni to the top appeared to pay off initially, but his dismissal by Vijaykumar Vyshak at the end of the PowerPlay shifted the momentum.
Rishabh Pant briefly reignited hopes with two consecutive sixes off Marco Jansen, including a signature one-handed strike that thrilled the crowd. However, his dismissal, followed quickly by Nicholas Pooran’s departure, derailed the chase. With 113 runs needed from the final five overs, the task became insurmountable.
Punjab’s bowlers then tightened their grip, executing their plans collectively to ensure there was no late comeback. Despite early resistance, Lucknow’s innings lost direction in the closing stages.
In the end, Punjab Kings’ all-round performance secured another convincing victory, reinforcing their status as early title contenders.
