Mumbai Indians kept their IPL 2026 playoff hopes alive with a commanding six-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants at Wankhede Stadium on Monday, thanks to a scintillating comeback knock from Rohit Sharma.
Returning after nearly a month on the sidelines with a hamstring injury, Rohit wasted no time making an impact. The veteran opener smashed 84 off just 44 balls, setting the tone for a successful chase of LSG’s imposing 228 for five. Walking in as an Impact Player, he looked at ease from the outset, shrugging off any signs of rust.
Rohit began cautiously before shifting gears against Mohammed Shami, dispatching him for early sixes. Soon, he found a reliable partner in Ryan Rickelton, who played an equally aggressive hand with 83 off 32 deliveries. The duo stitched together a match-defining 143-run opening partnership, putting Mumbai firmly in control.
Rickelton took on the bowlers from the start, while Rohit paced his innings smartly, accelerating after his partner’s dismissal to Mohsin Khan. Rohit looked set for a century before falling to Shami, offering a simple catch to M Siddharth. By then, however, the damage had been done.
Despite quick wickets of Tilak Varma and stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav—leading in place of the injured Hardik Pandya—Mumbai held their nerve. Naman Dhir ensured there were no late hiccups, guiding the team home comfortably.
Earlier, LSG’s innings was powered by a breathtaking counterattack from Nicholas Pooran, who blasted 63 off just 21 balls, including eight sixes. After Josh Inglis fell early, Pooran dominated alongside Mitchell Marsh, who contributed 44 off 25 in a rapid 94-run partnership.
Even Mumbai’s premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah came under pressure, conceding heavily during the Powerplay as LSG raced to 90 for one.
The momentum shifted when Corbin Bosch broke the partnership, dismissing Marsh shortly after. Quick wickets of Rishabh Pant and Akshat Raghuwanshi slowed LSG’s charge before an unbeaten 68-run stand between Himmat Singh and Aiden Markram pushed them past 200.
However, it wasn’t enough. Mumbai’s clinical chase, spearheaded by Rohit’s brilliance, reignited belief within the squad and kept their campaign alive in the race for the playoffs.
