As the league stage of the Indian Premier League came to a close, three franchises quietly made strategic squad additions that could significantly influence their retention plans ahead of the IPL 2027 auction.
In the final round of league fixtures, four players were signed as injury replacements across three teams. While none of the recruits featured in their teams’ closing league matches, the moves appeared to be driven less by immediate playing needs and more by long-term squad planning.
On Saturday, Mumbai Indians announced the signing of Mahipal Lomror and Ruchit Ahir as replacements for Quinton de Kock and Raj Bawa respectively.
At the same time, Rajasthan Royals brought in Emanjot Chahal in place of Ravi Singh.
A day later, defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders confirmed the signing of Luvnith Sisodia as a replacement for Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana.
Under IPL regulations, franchises are permitted to retain both an injured player and his replacement before the next auction, provided the injury occurs during or before the team’s 12th league game. This rule has increasingly become an important tactical tool for franchises looking to secure emerging talent without risking competitive bidding wars at future auctions.
Although the official announcements came after the completion of the 12th league fixtures, an IPL official confirmed that all injury cases had been communicated to league authorities before the deadline. As a result, all four replacement signings remain eligible for retention ahead of IPL 2027.
The rule has already proven valuable in previous seasons. During IPL 2025, Chennai Super Kings signed Dewald Brevis midway through the tournament as a replacement for Gurjapneet Singh. The franchise later retained both players before the auction, highlighting how replacement signings can evolve into long-term investments.
Franchises now increasingly view late-season replacements not simply as emergency cover, but as a strategic mechanism to expand their retention pool and strengthen squad depth for future seasons.
