Australia’s talisman batter Steve Smith feels he will be able to play in the T20 format longer than the Test and ODI form. Smith was not picked in Australia’s squad for the T20 World Cup but the right-hander wants to be part of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, when cricket will be reintroduced into the Games.
Smith recently led Washington Freedom to glory in the Major League Cricket as they defeated San Francisco Unicorns by 96 runs in the final. The veteran Australia scored 336 runs in nine innings at an average of 56 and thus played an instrumental role in taking his team to the title victory.
The former Australian captain has also recently signed a three-year deal with Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League.
Steve Smith said as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo, “I could still be playing T20 cricket in four years, so you never know. It’s a format I can see myself playing probably for a lot longer than some of the others, especially with the franchise stuff around the world. I’ve signed on here for three years so it’s only another year after that. It would be cool to be part of an Olympics.”
On the other hand, Smith also shed light on the upcoming Border-Gavaskar trophy against India. India has won the last two series against Australia while playing Downunder and Smith admitted the visitors have ticked the right boxes.
“You can’t really hide in a five-Test series like you probably can in a two-match series for instance. If someone gets the wood on you, it can be hard coming back from that. It’s going to be a wonderful series. We are probably the two best teams at the moment in Test cricket. We played the World Test Championship final last year and beat them there.
“They’ve been great out here the last couple of times, they’ve played really good cricket, hopefully we can turn the tables. It’s been 10 years since we last won the Border-Gavaskar trophy so need to do that this year.”
The opening Test match between India and Australia will be played at Perth from November 22 onwards.
