India’s gun fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has compared the captaincy styles of Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli. Bumrah made his debut under the leadership of MS Dhoni and took giant strides at the International level.
The ace fast bowler has also played under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma in the Indian Premier League for Mumbai Indians. Furthermore, Bumrah grew from strength to strength under the leadership of Virat Kohli, especially in the Test format.
Meanwhile, Bumrah bagged 15 wickets at an average of 8.26 and an economy rate of 4.17 in the eight matches of the T20 World Cup 2024. After the World Cup triumph, Bumrah was rested for the tour of Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka.
“Rohit is one of the few captains who has empathy towards bowlers, despite being a batter,” Bumrah told The Indian Express. “Rohit is not rigid; he is open to feedback,” Bumrah added, highlighting Sharma’s inclusive leadership style.
“MS gave me a lot of security quickly. He has a lot of faith in his instinct and doesn’t believe in over-planning,” Bumrah remarked.
“Virat is energy-driven, passionate, and wears his heart on his sleeve,” Bumrah said. “Now Virat is not the captain, but he is still a leader. Captaincy is a post, but a team is run by 11 people,” Bumrah stated.
On the other hand, Bumrah said bowlers are smart as they have to look for ways to dismiss the batters.
“I feel bowlers are smart people because they have to get the batsmen out,” he explained. “We’re right in the firing line. When we lose a game, it’s usually the bowlers who are blamed. So it’s a hard job,” he noted.
Bumrah added performing well in Test cricket is the pinnacle for him and if he does well in the red-ball format, the other formats take care of themselves.
“I come from a generation where Test cricket used to be shown more on television and for me, till date, it’s the greatest format because I feel that if I do well in that, all other formats will take care of themselves,” Bumrah concluded.
Bumrah hasn’t been picked for the Duleep trophy.
