It has been reported that India’s gun fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah will prioritise ODIs over T20Is with the 2027 ODI World Cup being India’s next target. Bumrah returned with impressive figures of 4-15 in his quota of four overs and was awarded Player of the Match after India registered a comprehensive 96-run win over the Kiwis in the final of the T20 World Cup.
The gun fast bowler took 14 wickets in the tournament at an average of 12.43 and a splendid economy rate of 6.21, which was the best for any bowler. The ace pacer was able to outfox the New Zealand batters with his slower deliveries in the summit clash at Ahmedabad.
With Bumrah’s workload under the monitor, it would make sense for him to give more preference to ODIs ahead of T20Is.
“Obviously, Bumrah’s fitness is, as always, key to any of India’s global campaign, and hence the Indian team management will have to be very careful and prioritise the formats. Keep Test cricket aside, which he will obviously play, but in the 50-over World Cup cycle, he will concentrate more on ODIs,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by PTI.
“There will be around 30-35 odd games, and one can’t take chances,” the source added.
Bumrah will next play for the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026, and then his focus will shift to Test matches and ODIs. The ace pacer had only played three Test matches on the England tour in 2025 to manage his workload.
There is no doubt that Bumrah is like a jewel, and India’s think tank must do everything to preserve him.
