Former Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Jay Shah has showered praise on Rohit Sharma’s leadership ahead of the three-match ODI series against New Zealand. Rohit led India to glory in the T20 World Cup 2024 and the team also won the Champions Trophy 2025 under his leadership.
Team India made it to the final of the World Test Championship 2023 and the ODI World Cup 2023 but could not cross the last hurdle against Australia on both occasions.
In 2025, Rohit was removed from ODI captaincy as the selectors said it is difficult to manage three different captains across all formats.
Jay Shah said during an event in Mumbai, “Hamaare captain idhar baithe hain. Main toh captain hee bolunga kyunki aap 2 trophy jeet ke laaye isliye. 2023 mein lagataar 10 jeet ke baad, hum dil jeete lekin trophy nahin jeet paaye. February 2024 mein maine Rajkot mein bola tha ki is baar hum dil bhi jeetenge aur cup bhi jeetenge.”
Translation: (Our captain is sitting here. I will say captain because he made India win two consecutive trophies. In 2023, we won hearts but not the trophy after ten consecutive victories. I said in Rajkot in February 2024 that we will win both the trophy and hearts.)
Meanwhile, Rohit has been in red-hot form in the recent past. He scored 202 runs in three ODIs against Australia and was awarded Player of the Series. He then scored 146 runs in three games against South Africa and continued his rich form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Mumbai. Sharma smashed 155 Runs in 94 balls including 18 Fours & 9 Sixes against Sikkim in the 50-over domestic tournament.
Rohit will be seen in action in the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand, starting Sunday.
