Former Indian skipper Kapil Dev has warned that the experts and fans are talking too big about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and urged them to give him some time. Sooryavanshi has been the talk of the town since he has bludgeoned some of the best bowlers of the world.
The youngster smashed 776 runs in 16 matches of IPL 2026 at an amazing strike rate of 237.30 and bagged multiple records in his first full season. The prodigy batter was given a maiden T20I call-up after he impressed one and all with his hard hitting.
However, Dev questioned if Sooryavanshi can play five maiden overs while playing in the red-ball format.
“The day he plays Tests, can he play out five maiden overs? In T20, it is fabulous. At such a young age, to make such an impact, you will not find even 1% of such people,” Dev said on a podcast with Sports Tak.
The 1983 World Cup winning captain said Sooryavanshi should be given his chance if he is ready to play at the top level.
“We can talk about Sachin because he was the same age when he played. We used to think about whether it would be too soon. But if you look at history, you will realise. Sometimes it might be too late. When you are on the rise, play. I feel that if he is ready, don’t count his age. Count on his ability. If you feel he can play, definitely make him play,” he stated.
The former all-rounder said the youngster should not be hyped so much as it would be difficult for him to understand it.
“I have not seen a lot of him, but have seen a bit. A huge talent, without any doubt. I think we are talking too big about him. At the moment, give him some time. Don’t do it too much, as in this age, he has no understanding. But if you talk about Talent, yes, he is as good as Sachin or Virat. That talent is seen. But it is of T20. In other formats, he has to prove.”
Sooryavanshi is currently part of India’s T20I team for the series against England.
