Before a ball has even been bowled in IPL 2026, Kolkata Knight Riders find themselves staring at an unexpectedly steep climb. What should have been a season of recalibration now risks turning into one of survival, as a string of setbacks has significantly dented their playoff hopes.
The most immediate concern lies in the bowling department. Harshit Rana is all but ruled out, Matheesha Pathirana remains doubtful for the opening weeks, and Akash Deep will miss the season entirely. For a side already grappling with transition, these absences could prove decisive.
KKR’s challenges are not new, but they are now more pronounced. The franchise continues to search for a reliable replacement for Andre Russell’s all-round impact, while Sunil Narine is no longer at his peak, and Varun Chakravarthy enters the season with questions lingering after a subdued T20 World Cup. Together, these factors leave KKR with a bowling attack that lacks both certainty and proven match-winners.
The big-ticket signing of Cameron Green for ₹25.20 crore was expected to inject balance into the side. However, the extent of his bowling role remains unclear. If Green is to justify his price tag, he may need to contribute significantly with the ball—but whether he can fill the void left by a specialist wicket-taker like Pathirana is another question altogether.
Conditions at Eden Gardens could offer some relief. On slow, low surfaces, the spin trio of Narine, Chakravarthy, and Anukul Roy could become a potent force. But should the pitches play true, KKR’s lack of cutting edge in pace bowling may be exposed.
Much will depend on how the supporting cast performs. Vaibhav Arora now carries added responsibility, while the likes of Kartik Tyagi and Umran Malik—if selected—must deliver immediately. Saurabh Dubey, picked as Akash Deep’s replacement, could come into the mix sooner than expected.
In contrast, the batting unit appears far more settled. Flexibility is a key strength, but it hinges on Narine’s role. If he opens, Rovman Powell could slot into the middle order. If not, one of the New Zealand openers—Finn Allen or Tim Seifert—may get the nod at the top.
The absence of Venkatesh Iyer also opens the door for young Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who could see more opportunities than experienced names like Manish Pandey and Rahul Tripathi. Among the new recruits, Rachin Ravindra and Blessing Muzarabani add depth, with the latter potentially playing a bigger role given the uncertainty surrounding the overseas pace options.
At this stage, KKR do not appear to be a playoff-ready side. Yet, the IPL has a long history of defying expectations. While the odds may be stacked against them, it would be unwise to write them off entirely before the tournament unfolds.
