Kolkata Knight Riders kept its playoff hopes alive with a determined four-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians in a rain-interrupted IPL clash at Eden Gardens on Wednesday night.
In a contest dominated by disciplined bowling and sensible batting, KKR successfully chased down a modest target of 148 with seven balls to spare, thanks largely to crucial contributions from Manish Pandey and Rovman Powell.
After winning the toss, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane elected to field first, and his bowlers responded immediately with one of the team’s finest PowerPlay performances of the season. Mumbai Indians were reduced to 46 for four in the first six overs as KKR’s pace attack dismantled the top order.
Cameron Green made an instant impact by striking twice in his opening over. He first removed Ryan Rickelton, who was caught brilliantly by Manish Pandey, before dismissing Naman Dhir caught behind. Left-arm seamer Saurabh Dubey then deepened Mumbai’s troubles by removing both Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav in successive overs.
Rohit’s dismissal stood out as one of the highlights of the evening, with Green sprinting nearly 33 yards from mid-on to complete a stunning catch while avoiding a collision with Powell. Suryakumar, meanwhile, dragged the ball back onto his stumps.
A brief rain interruption halted play for nearly an hour, but KKR’s bowlers maintained control once the match resumed. Veteran spinner Sunil Narine mixed his variations cleverly, while Varun Chakaravarthy bowled accurately despite carrying a foot injury.
Tilak Varma briefly threatened to rebuild the innings before falling to Kartik Tyagi. Narine later dismissed Hardik Pandya, leaving Mumbai struggling before Corbin Bosch’s unbeaten 32 pushed the total to 147 for eight.
KKR’s chase began shakily with Finn Allen departing in the opening over. Rahane and Manish Pandey steadied the innings with a 38-run stand before Bosch struck twice to dismiss Rahane and Green.
Playing his first innings of the season after limited opportunities, Manish showed composure on a difficult surface. His measured 45, featuring elegant straight drives and square cuts, laid the foundation for the chase. Alongside Powell, who played with controlled aggression, he stitched together a crucial 64-run partnership that shifted momentum back towards KKR.
The quick dismissals of both batters briefly raised tension inside Eden Gardens, but Rinku Singh held his nerve in the closing stages to guide KKR home and keep the franchise firmly in contention for a playoff berth.
