Former Indian opener Kris Srikkanth reckons head coach Gautam Gambhir will leave his role if he becomes the chairman of selectors. Srikkanth has performed the selector role in the past and has put his hat in the ring for the job.

Current chief selector Ajit Agarkar is all set to relinquish his duties after he decided not to extend his current contract, which will end on October 4, 2026. Srikkanth praised Agarkar for having a solid tenure but sympathised with the former pacer for India’s loss in the ODI World Cup 2023 final against Australia.

“Ajit as a chairman has done a very good job. Ajit Agarkar and the selection committee team, they have done a reasonably very good job. I give them the credit. They should have won the 2023 World Cup. Poor guys came up to the final. They lost the final. I don’t know why he wants to give up the chairmanship. That’s his choice. I am available for chairmanship if they call me. I am there. Do you want to win the 2027 World Cup? Come to me. If I become the chairman, Gambhir will run away. He will shoot me,” Srikkanth said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Srikkanth admitted the selectors’ job is a thankless one as they never get the credit they deserve.

“Being a chairman or a selector is a thankless job. No matter what you do, people will talk. We have criticised on our channel many times. We have praised as well. That’s the nature of the job. In the last few months, from whatever we read in the press reports and the media reports, there has been a lot of friction between Ajit Agarkar and XYZ. I don’t know who that XYZ is,” he said.

During Agarkar’s stint, India won the T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026 and also triumphed in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
