Former Indian spinner Maninder Singh recalled 10 years ago, he made a prediction that Shreyas Iyer would one day lead India in International cricket. Singh’s prediction came true when Iyer led India for the first time on the UK tour.

But, Iyer’s captaincy stint didn’t start on a good note as India was stunned by Ireland 0-2. Furthermore, the Men in Blue suffered a 0-4 series loss against England and thus he lost six matches on the bounce as a leader. 

However, India was able to get a much-needed series win as they recently thumped Zimbabwe by 3-0. Iyer has been leading from the front and scored 218 runs in five matches against England in five games.

Maninder Singh said on Fancode, “He (Shreyas Iyer) is one cricketer about whom I made a prediction 10 years ago that he would one day captain India in every format. That was my assessment. Whenever I watched him play, I felt he had a different class altogether. He looked like a special kind of player.

“That’s why I believed he would go on to captain India across all formats. It didn’t happen, but that’s alright. He has still become India’s T20I captain. I have very high expectations from him, and I have always been one of his biggest well-wishers,” he added.

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer was given the captaincy baton after his impressive showing in IPL. Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders to glory in IPL 2024 and also led Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to the final of the tournament in 2020 and 2025 seasons respectively.

The Mumbai batter has also performed consistently in the ODI format while batting at number four and he is also the vice-captain in the 50-over format.
