Former Indian batter Manoj Tiwary slammed Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad after they suffered a five-wicket loss against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Monday.
Gaikwad scored a mundane knock of 15 runs off 21 balls as he failed to change gears at the top of the order. The CSK captain also didn’t get enough strike as he was dismissed in the 12th over.
Gaikwad has scored his runs at a strike rate of 120.67 in the ongoing season, which hasn’t been good enough as teams have consistently posted more than 200 runs on the board.
Tiwary said Gaikwad’s poor batting form has led to his captaincy blunders in the ongoing season.
“If he scores 15 runs in 21 balls, how will the captaincy work? We saw that. Akeal Hosein bowled well for his three overs, picking up an important wicket as well, and he did not complete his quota on a wicket where the ball was spinning and stopping a bit. The captaincy has been quite weak today. They could have made something out of this 180-odd score, especially when you have bowlers like Noor and Akeal. Like we were praising Pat Cummins for the way he rotated his bowlers, we did not get to see that with Ruturaj Gaikwad and CSK,” Tiwary said on Cricbuzz.
The former Bengal cricketer said Gaikwad needs to introspect in order to get better in his captaincy.
“We keep questioning players and the coaches, but we have to question the head coach and the bowling coach as well. If a captain misses something on the field, then it is the job of the coaches to send the message that bowlers are bowling in the wrong areas and variations. So this shows that something is not working, the atmosphere is not right, something seems to be wrong from the inside, something seems to be lacking,” Manoj Tiwary said.
CSK will next take on Gujarat Titans at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Thursday.
