Former Australian opener Mark Waugh has named Yashasvi Jaiswal as the next greatest Test batter amid the ongoing Ashes 2025-26. Jaiswal has impressed in his young Test career and has ticked the right boxes at the top level.
The left-hander has scored 2511 runs in 28 Test matches at an average of 49.24. Jaiswal also impressed on his maiden Australian tour as he amassed 391 runs in five Test matches at an average of 43.44.
The southpaw also scored 411 runs in five Test matches on the England tour at an average of 41.11 in 2025.
Waugh told Kayo Sports, “There are three in the running: Jaiswal, Brook, and Ravindra. I am going with Jaiswal, 24 years of age. He has already got a double hundred and averages just under 50. There’s something special about this kid. I’ve got Jaiswal as the next champion batter joining the elite group. Brilliant player, so that’s my pick, the young Indian.”
On the other hand, former England skipper Michael Vaughan picked Harry Brook as the next greatest Test batter. Brook has scored 3178 runs in 35 Test matches at an average of 54.79.
“I’ll throw Shubman Gill’s name in there, but Harry Brook. Harry Brook is the next one we will be talking about. We are already talking about him on his trip, with the way he is playing. He has not got the amount of runs I expected, but over the course of the next 10 years, we are going to see some of the most extraordinary innings from this young chap. He has already played many in his career so far. He’s an all-format player, and he is box office,” said Vaughan (via the aforementioned source).
Brook was dismissed for 42 runs in the second innings of the ongoing fifth Ashes Test against Australia on Wednesday.
