Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes England have a better spin attack than India ahead of the T20 World Cup semifinal. Adil Rashid, Liam Dawson, and Will Jacks will be England’s main spinners for the must-win game.
Adil Rashid has scalped 11 wickets in seven matches at an average of 19 whereas Will Jacks has scalped seven wickets in six innings. Furthermore, Dawson has bagged 10 wickets in seven matches at an average of 19.
On the other hand, Varun Chakravarthy has scalped 12 wickets in seven matches of the ongoing T20I showpiece at an average of 15.33 and an economy rate of 7.67. But the mystery spinner hasn’t been at his best in the last three games.
Michael Vaughan said on the BBC, “England have a better spin attack than India. [Varun] Chakravarthy has been got at. Dawson, Rashid, and Will Jacks have been the best trio in the tournament in terms of spin. England’s fielding has been absolutely exceptional. They look really alert. England’s running between the wickets has been exceptional. The small percentage things you can control themselves, England seems to be doing very well. I just have a funny feeling England can get the job done in Mumbai.
“They seem to have found a way of winning. The win against New Zealand, even though a dead rubber, to get over the line was a great effort.”
Meanwhile, England opener Jos Buttler has struggled to get going in the ongoing tournament; however, Vaughan has backed the veteran batter to shine against India.
“You always look at your technique when you are not feeling as good as you have done. Jos is a hand-eye player. Just stare right in the middle of the ball and react to the deliveries. The shots he hasn’t been playing are the ramp shots.
“I think this pitch will suit that shot, and to play that shot, you have to stare at the ball right onto the bat. When he is playing well, he gets those shots out early.”
India will take on England in the second semifinal at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, on Thursday.
