Former Indian fast bowler Mohit Sharma said Shimron Hetmyer should have played with more responsibility after Rajasthan Royals suffered a crushing loss of 77 runs against Gujarat Titans at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur on Saturday.
Hetmyer was dismissed after scoring six runs off seven balls when he top-edged the ball while batting against Kagiso Rabada. Hetmyer has scored 78 runs in seven innings at an average of 13 and a strike rate of 113.04 in the ongoing IPL 2026.
“Hetmyer was the one player who should have taken the team deep, the situation was such. He could have atleast shown that he can play the rest of the matches. He could have shown that he can cover the gap if Riyan Parag continues to miss more matches. That did not happen, but the credit should go to the GT bowlers as well,” he said on Cricbuzz.
The former Indian pacer also questioned Rajasthan Royals’ team selection after loss against Gujarat Titans. Mohit added that the inaugural champions lacked depth and experience in their playing XI.
“I think it is important to think that was this even your best playing XI? Because when they were bowling, you could see some inexperience in the bowling, it was visible they did not have an experienced bowler. When they were batting, there were names, but they did not have the depth, the tail was looking a bit too long,” Mohit Sharma said.
“There was intent, but there were no players who could turn the match around. So they have to think about his playing XI now, and think whether they should make some changes after losing back-to-back matches now. The questions that come up at this stage of the tournament are the worst because it takes time to find the right answer,” he concluded.
Rajasthan Royals will next take on Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on Sunday.
