Mumbai Indians has appointed Luke Williams as its new head coach ahead of the 2027 Women’s Premier League season, replacing Lisa Keightley as the franchise prepares for another title challenge.
Williams arrives with extensive coaching experience across women’s cricket, having worked in Australia, England and India over the past two decades. He has also been serving as an assistant coach with the England women’s team since 2025.
His appointment gives Mumbai Indians a coach with a proven record in major franchise competitions, including success in both the Women’s Big Bash League and the WPL.
Before moving into coaching, Williams enjoyed a successful career in grade cricket. He won the Bradman Medal three times, receiving the honour in the 2005-06, 2007-08 and 2009-10 seasons.
Williams later established his coaching credentials with Adelaide Strikers. Under his leadership, the team captured its first Women’s Big Bash League championship in 2022. The Strikers followed that breakthrough by successfully defending the title in 2023, giving Williams consecutive WBBL trophies as head coach.
His experience in Indian cricket includes an important spell with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Williams was head coach when RCB won the Women’s Premier League in 2024, delivering the franchise its first major trophy across its men’s and women’s teams.
He will now take charge of another of the WPL’s most successful sides.
Mumbai Indians has won two championships in the first four editions of the competition. Led by India captain Harmanpreet Kaur, the franchise won the inaugural WPL title in 2023 before returning to the top two years later with another championship in 2025.
Williams will succeed Keightley in the head coach position as Mumbai Indians looks ahead to the 2027 campaign.
His appointment brings together a franchise with two WPL championships and a coach who has already experienced title success in the competition. Williams’ record also includes back-to-back WBBL championships, adding further experience to Mumbai Indians’ coaching setup.
With the change in leadership confirmed ahead of the new season, Williams will now be tasked with guiding Harmanpreet-led Mumbai Indians as it pursues another WPL crown in 2027.
