Former Indian spinner Murali Kartik lavished praise on Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after India registered a six-wicket win in the third T20I at the Hnry Stadium, Wellington on Tuesday. Sooryavanshi, who batted at one down in the second game, was promoted to his natural opening position in the run chase of 199.
The left-handed pair gave a blistering start to the team, scoring 118 runs in the Powerplay overs, the most by a full-member ICC team. Australia held the previous record as they had scored 113-1 in the first six overs against Scotland.
The duo added 133 runs off just 43 balls as the New Zealand bowlers were taken to the cleaners. Abhishek completed his fifty off just 15 balls whereas Sooryavanshi smashed 45 runs off only 19 balls. Abhishek eventually went on to score 113 runs off 38 balls, including nine fours and 11 sixes.
“After such batting, when a new batter comes and defends two balls, you say what batting he is doing. It was unbelievable batting. I feel very sad when I see bowlers getting hit so badly. I was feeling happy because the match was ending early, but I always feel for the bowlers. How do you escape?” Muralli said on Sony Sports.
“Aapne kaha windy Wellington, unhone New Zealand ki hawa nikaal di. 50 in 14 balls and 100 in five overs. I was seeing the speeds, lengths, and lines – they tried all ploys, and there was only one result, either a four or a six. It becomes very difficult as a bowler,” he added.
Kartik also praised Abhishek Sharma for mentoring a young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the run-chase.
“It’s very important. Everyone needs a sounding board, and everyone needs a player you can take along. It’s a very different world. Whoever reaches that level, you are in awe of all the players, and you want to feel comfortable in that environment,” he added.
The former left-arm orthodox spinner added that playing for India is different despite Sooryavanshi savoring all the success in the IPL.
“He is 15 years old. He might have played in the IPL, which is a place where you meet a lot of people, but India is different. When you play for your country, you are picked from a cream, and you want to feel comfortable there. It felt good that he did the job of a mentor. He said very lovingly that they don’t want him to feel any pressure,” Kartik observed.
The fourth T20I between India and New Zealand will be played at Eden Park, Auckland, on Friday.
