Obviously if given an opportunity, it’s an honor and there’s no bigger feeling than that – Jasprit Bumrah on leading India’s Test team

India’s gun fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah feels it will be an honor if he will be given an opportunity to lead the Indian Test team.

The BCCI will soon name India’s new Test skipper after Virat Kohli decided to relinquish his captaincy duties.

Bumrah is considered to be one of the prospects and has a good cricketing brain. The fast bowler though doesn’t have any prior experience of leadership as he hasn’t even led an IPL team.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that KL Rahul could be named as the team’s new Test captain. Furthermore, former legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar and all-rounder Yuvraj Singh have put their weight behind Rishabh Pant to be India’s next Test skipper.

On the other hand, Jasprit Bumrah made his Test debut back in the 2017-18 series against South Africa and since then he has done a fine job as the leader of the pack. The ace paceman has scalped 113 wickets in 27 Test matches at an impressive average of 22.86.

“For me, I am ready to contribute in whatever position, in whatever way I can to the team. If given an opportunity, of course, you would think about it. But that’s something that I don’t chase, I like to do my work, however, I can contribute – having a post or not, it doesn’t really matter. Whatever contribution you can give, I try to do that. And that’s always been my process and that’s always what I look to do.

“Obviously if given an opportunity, it’s an honor and there’s no bigger feeling than that. But yeah, I try to focus on the things that I can contribute even if I am not given a position of a leader. Because that’s the job of a teammate, that however you can help each other, in any situation, that’s very important,” Jasprit Bumrah said ahead of the ODI series against South Africa.

In fact, it has been noticed that the batters are mostly given the responsibility to lead a Test team and India hasn’t had many leaders who were fast bowlers in their cricketing history except Kapil Dev.

However, recently Cricket Australia decided to appoint Pat Cummins and he led his team to a 4-0 triumph in the recently concluded Ashes against England.

Meanwhile, India and South will face off each other in the three-match ODI series. The first ODI will be played at Paarl on 19th January.
