Former Indian batter Parthiv Patel slammed India’s batting after the team suffered a 76-run loss against South Africa at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Sunday. India was bowled out for a paltry score of 111 after the Proteas posted 187 runs on the board.

None of the Indian batters could show stomach for a fight, barring Shivam Dube, who scored 42 runs off just 37 balls. India kept losing wickets at regular intervals and they were never in the game in the run chase.

“Not only in this game, even against Namibia and the USA, and against Pakistan also, though that was a difficult wicket to bat on, but that’s something which is a worry for India, the way India have lost wickets in the powerplay, especially against the off-spinners,” Parthiv Patel said on Star Sports.

South African captain Aiden Markram provided a perfect start as he dismissed Ishan Kishan for a duck.

“Markram today (Sunday), you can consider him a part-time spinner. I feel India are not taking those percentage chances. I feel they are playing too many shots against the angle. I think that’s something all the left-handers will have to take a look at,” he added.

The Gujarat Titans assistant coach said India can send Suryakumar Yadav at one drop to break left-handers’ monotony at the top.

“Maybe try and change the batting order a bit. Obviously, three left-handers at the top, you can send Suryakumar Yadav at No. 3. That’s something I thought India could have done in this game, but unfortunately, the plans are not coming off,” he said.

Patel said the ultra-aggressive approach can backfire and it did for India in a crucial game.

“When you are playing this high-risk, high-reward game, where you are constantly taking risks, you are going to get days like this. Unfortunately, it has come on a very, very crucial day,” Parthiv observed.

India will next take on Zimbabwe at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, on Thursday.
