PBKS vs DC IPL 2026: Punjab Seek Bounce-Back Win; Delhi Aim for Late Surge

    May 11, 2026

What we have here feels like a rerun of that epic run chase in Delhi, and there is plenty to  look forward to. Both sides seem to be in slightly different positions compared to a couple  of weeks ago. Not necessarily in statistical terms, but in terms of momentum and overall  feel, this game carries significant weight, particularly for Punjab Kings. While they are still  reasonably placed on the table, this match has the look and feel of a must-win for them.  They are up against a side that has been struggling for a while now, and from Punjab’s  perspective, securing a win here feels crucial for their stability and progress as a group  aiming to stay in that top-four bracket.

Punjab come into this game on the back of a few losses. Having worked on their last  couple of matches, one observation stands out: in those games, they could easily have  lost by much bigger margins. Credit must be given to them for the resilience they’ve  shown—they’ve kept fighting right until the end, even when the chances of victory were  slim. That fighting spirit is an excellent quality and one that will serve them well in the  remainder of the tournament. Matches against sides like Gujarat and Sunrisers highlighted  this—despite being under pressure, they stayed in the contest longer than expected, even  if the eventual margin might have suggested otherwise.

One of Punjab’s key strengths has been their top order, especially players like Prabhsimran  Singh and Priyansh Arya. However, Priyansh has struggled in recent matches. Bowlers  have consistently targeted him with deliveries across his body, around chest and head  height. It’s a pattern that began with Jofra Archer and has since been continued by the likes  of Mohammed Siraj, and Pat Cummins. This clearly indicates a tactical trend against a  high-quality batter. At such times in a player’s career, it becomes essential to step back,  reassess, and find a method to counter it.

In the last game, Priyansh seemed caught between two approaches: whether to stay leg side as he did against Siraj or to go for aggressive pull and hook shots as he attempted  against Cummins.

My personal view is that he might be better off staying leg-side and targeting the off-side  instead. There appears to be some uncertainty in his decision-making at the moment. That  said, he’s a top-quality player and has likely used the time between games to reflect and  adjust. For Punjab, his return to form is vital because his runs at the top have been a major  strength.

The team’s struggles have partly come from not getting the strong starts they were  accustomed to earlier. Though, to be fair, conditions in Ahmedabad against Gujarat were  extremely challenging, making it difficult to judge their performance purely on that basis.

Looking ahead, handling specific bowling challenges will be important for Priyansh. Facing  someone like Mitchell Starc presents a different angle. The short ball from Mitchell Starc  will angle into him rather than across, which could force a change in his approach if that  tactic is used.

Fielding was another major issue in their last game against Sunrisers, where they dropped  four relatively straightforward catches. In a format as short as T20, such lapses can be  decisive, and it likely contributed heavily to their defeat. It’s safe to assume that fielding  has been a key focus area in training since then.

There are positives as well. Cooper Connolly batted beautifully in the last match, and  without his contribution, they wouldn’t have come as close as they did. That performance  is a significant boost. The bowling unit also appears to be improving. Arshdeep Singh, who  had shown signs of fatigue earlier in the tournament, is now starting to regain form. Marcus  Stoinis has shown smart gameplay, while Yuzvendra Chahal has looked closer to his best,  despite being slightly underutilised in one of the games, likely due to conditions.

Lockie Ferguson returning to the side is another big positive. He offers good control,  especially with variations like the slower ball, and seems like a valuable addition. On the  flip side, Marco Jansen appears slightly below his best, lacking some zip off the surface.  Punjab will hope he regains form soon.

Switching focus to Delhi Capitals, they might actually be relieved to be playing away from  home, given they’ve lost five of their last six matches there. In their most recent game,  there were some positives. Pathum Nissanka showed good form at the top, although he’ll  be aiming to convert starts into bigger scores. KL Rahul, on the other hand, comes in with  strong memories, having scored 150 against Punjab earlier—a reminder of his class.

However, Delhi’s middle order looks uncertain and tentative. There has been a lot of  chopping and changing in both personnel and roles, leading to a lack of clarity in handling  different match situations. It feels like David Miller should be in the side, but fitting him into  the combination is not straightforward. With players like Ngidi, Starc, Nissanka, and Tristan  Stubbs in the mix, balancing the lineup becomes challenging.

Stubbs, in particular, is a player who deserves more opportunities to face deliveries, as he  has the ability to change the course of a game. Pairing him with experienced players like

Nitish Rana could provide some stability. Experienced campaigners are often crucial in  navigating tough phases.

Axar Patel has been excellent with the ball but is clearly struggling with the bat, which  affects the balance of the middle order. His batting form is important because he provides  a left-handed option and can play a central role. Similarly, Kuldeep Yadav has not been at  his best with the ball. With key players underperforming, Delhi’s overall effectiveness has  suffered. In the last game, Vipraj Nigam was preferred over Kuldeep, who came in as an  impact substitute, but ideally, a fully firing attack featuring Starc, Ngidi, Kuldeep, and Axar  looks strong on paper.

While it’s going to be extremely difficult for Delhi Capitals to make the playoffs at this  stage, recent trends in the tournament show that less-fancied teams can still produce  strong finishes. That offers them a glimmer of hope.

That said, given the current context and overall quality, Punjab Kings look better positioned  to bounce back. With their fighting spirit and key players capable of turning things around,  they will be expected to put in a strong performance and come through in this contest.
