Punjab Kings (PBKS) are facing a significant reshuffle in their coaching setup ahead of IPL 2027, with Brad Haddin and James Hopes reportedly leaving the franchise’s support staff led by head coach Ricky Ponting.
Their departures follow the resignation of spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule, leaving Punjab Kings searching for at least three new members of their coaching team before the upcoming season.
According to sources, Haddin and Hopes recently informed the franchise management of their decisions to step down. Both former Australian cricketers are believed to have secured coaching opportunities in the Big Bash League (BBL).
Haddin, a former Australia wicketkeeper, served as Punjab Kings’ fielding coach, while Hopes was responsible for overseeing the team’s fast-bowling department.
Their exits create additional challenges for Ponting, who will now play a leading role in identifying suitable replacements as the franchise prepares for the IPL 2027 auction, scheduled for mid-December.
Hopes had maintained a close professional relationship with Ponting and followed the former Australian captain to Punjab Kings from Delhi Capitals a couple of seasons ago.
Haddin, meanwhile, had been part of the franchise’s coaching structure before Ponting’s arrival, having continued from the previous setup led by Trevor Bayliss.
Despite the unexpected changes, Punjab Kings management is understood to be working closely with Ponting to rebuild the support staff.
Sources indicate that the franchise could recommend potential candidates, but Ponting will have the final authority over appointments.
“The head coach will take the call,” a source said, confirming that the Australian will be responsible for selecting his preferred coaching personnel.
Interviews and discussions with prospective candidates are expected to progress once Ponting has assessed the available options. The franchise hopes to finalise the appointments before the auction.
Ponting, however, did not immediately respond when approached for comment regarding the developments.
The coaching changes began with Bahutule’s departure shortly after the conclusion of IPL 2026.
The former Indian cricketer resigned from his position to become the spin-bowling coach of the Indian national team under head coach Gautam Gambhir.
Bahutule had joined Punjab Kings ahead of IPL 2026 after previously working with Rajasthan Royals. He replaced Sunil Joshi, who had moved to the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru as a spin-bowling coach.
With three important coaching positions now vacant, Punjab Kings face a crucial period of rebuilding behind the scenes.
The upcoming appointments will be important in shaping Ponting’s support team as the franchise looks to prepare effectively for IPL 2027.
