Ravichandran Ashwin, the renowned off-spinner, experienced an unexpected exclusion from India’s playing XI in the World Test Championship final against Australia last June. The decision to drop their premier spinner in such a crucial encounter drew criticism from numerous experts, as India went on to suffer a disheartening defeat, losing by a significant margin of 209 runs.
However, cricket enthusiasts will soon witness Ashwin back in action during India’s upcoming tour of the West Indies. The seasoned spinner has been included in the squad for the two Tests scheduled to take place in Dominica and Trinidad, respectively. The team, led by Rohit Sharma, arrived in the Caribbean two weeks prior to the commencement of the first Test on July 12, emphasizing their commitment to thorough preparation.
In a recent statement on his YouTube channel, Ashwin highlighted the significance placed on preparation by India’s head coach, Rahul Dravid. He explained, “We have come early for a 10-day window for our preparation to get rid of the jet lag. Our coach Rahul Dravid puts great emphasis on preparation. If we can take care of the preparation, the rest will take care of itself.”
Ashwin further expressed his enthusiasm regarding the current state of Indian cricket, acknowledging the influx of fresh talent within the team. The Test squad features uncapped players such as Mukesh Kumar and Yashasvi Jaiswal, while Ruturaj Gaikwad, yet to make his Test debut, has been named in both the Test and ODI squads. Additionally, Jaydev Unadkat, aged 31, has secured a spot in both squads, and Ashwin expects him to receive ample opportunities during the Caribbean series.
“With a multitude of new and exciting faces within the Indian camp, including Mukesh Kumar and Jaydev Unadkat, I anticipate a captivating and promising time for Indian cricket,” remarked Ashwin, reflecting his positive outlook.
The series against the West Indies not only marks the commencement of India’s 2023-2025 World Test Championship cycle but also presents an opportunity for the team to prove their mettle and make a strong start. With Ashwin’s return to the playing XI and the infusion of emerging talents, fans eagerly await the forthcoming battles in the Caribbean, filled with anticipation and excitement for the future of Indian cricket.
