Former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has showered praise on Shubman Gill’s captaincy amid the ODI series against the West Indies. Ashwin said he had initial doubts on Gill’s captaincy but the latter has impressed with the way he has led the Indian team in Test and ODI format.
Under Gill’s captaincy, India has won seven ODI games, whereas they have suffered six losses. India’s best result under Gill’s leadership in Test format came on the England tour, where the visitors managed a 2-2 draw in a five-match series in 2025.
Gill also recently led Gujarat Titans to the IPL 2026 final but they could not cross the last hurdle against RCB.
“His captaincy is also getting better day by day. There were some doubts in my head, but we have to compliment him. I am happily and pleasantly surprised by how his captaincy has gone up. He led GT well too this year, and he is showing it with India as well. It is a great quality to have,” Ashwin said on ‘Ash ki Baat’.
Ashwin also praised Gill for his consistency as a batter. The former off-spinner reckons Gill can come close to breaking Virat Kohli’s records if he gets to play as many games.
“Shubman Gill is a complete batter in the next generation of Indian batters. Between him and the rest, there is a bit of daylight. He is that good. I think going forward, he will come close to Virat if he gets that many games. Unfortunately for Gill, ODI cricket’s existence is in slight doubt. ODI cricket suits him a lot. But ODI cricket might not happen as much as it did when Virat was playing. It is unfortunate.”
Gill scored an impressive knock of 110 runs off 108 balls in the opening ODI against the West Indies.
The second ODI between India and the West Indies will be played at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati on Wednesday.
