Ravichandran Ashwin picks top 4 opening pairs after NZ vs IND 2026 1st T20I

    October 23, 2026

Former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has picked the best top four opening pairs in T20Is. Ashwin picked India’s Sanju Samson-Abhishek Sharma, England’s Jos Buttler-Phil Salt, New Zealand’s Tim Seifert-Finn Allen and Australia’s Travis Head-Mitchell Marsh as the four best opening combinations in the shortest format.

However, Ashwin selected India’s Sanju Samson-Abhishek Sharma as the best in the world as the left-hander achieves early impetus with this blistering batting and there is hardly any chink in the armor of both batters.

Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma were at their absolute best against New Zealand, scoring 93 runs off just 35 balls in the opening T20I against New Zealand at the Hagley Oval, Christchurch on Thursday in the run chase of 226.

Ashwin said on his YouTube Channel, “It’s close as to whether they are the most destructive opening partnership. On the opposite side, the Allen-Seifert partnership is also deadly. They are no less than the Samson-Abhishek partnership. Likewise, the Salt-Buttler pair are no less. In this day and age, barring Sri Lanka and Pakistan, every opening pair is destructive in T20s.”

He added, “Australia, with Marsh and Head, also have an amazing opening pair, who are brothers of destruction too. But I’ll go with India at this stage. It’s mainly because Abhishek Sharma provides the extra impetus. Plus, India’s is a left-right combination. Yes, Australia’s opening partnership is also that, but India’s combination provides more teeth because you can stop Marsh and Head through spin.”

On the other hand, Ashwin revealed his fielding coach while playing European T20 Premier League said India won’t have lost against Ireland if they had played Shubman Gill.

He added, “Recently, when I played in the ETPL, our fielding coach said India would not have lost in Ireland if Shubman Gill played. He said Gill would have played in a measured manner because he’s a high-quality player. That was actually right. In those 160 to 170 conditions, Gill is a huge value-add. But that’s how India used to play in T20s.

“It was the Abhishek-Sanju partnership that changed that style. They made it clear that 180 to 190 wasn’t enough and that they would aim for 220 to 230 at all times. However, with that template, India have to accept losses like the ones in Ireland, when it’s low-scoring. If you want wins like these (chasing 226), you can’t achieve those 160 scores.”

Gill will lead India in the ODI (first three games) and Test series against New Zealand.
