Royal Challengers Bengaluru produced a commanding all-round display to defeat Punjab Kings by 23 runs at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala on Sunday, tightening their grip on the IPL playoff race while dealing a major blow to Punjab’s qualification hopes.
Despite a spirited counterattack from Shashank Singh, who smashed 56 off just 27 deliveries, Punjab’s chase of 223 never fully recovered from early damage caused by Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
The experienced pacer struck twice in the powerplay, removing Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh with movement through the air. Punjab’s troubles deepened when skipper Shreyas Iyer edged behind after once again struggling outside the off stump.
At 93 for five, the chase appeared all but over before Shashank and Marcus Stoinis launched a late assault. The pair added 67 runs for the sixth wicket and briefly reignited hopes of an unlikely comeback.
Shashank particularly took apart leg-spinner Suyash Sharma in a 20-run over, hammering three towering hits straight back over the bowler’s head. He also improvised cleverly against Krunal Pandya, ramping a surprise short ball and piercing the field with precision cuts.
Stoinis added momentum with powerful drives against Bhuvneshwar and Rasikh Dar, but the turning point came when Josh Hazlewood trapped him with a full toss. Hazlewood then conceded only seven runs in the penultimate over to effectively shut the door on Punjab.
Earlier, Venkatesh Iyer starred with the bat for Bengaluru, blasting 73 off 40 balls to power his side to a formidable 222 for four. After a cautious start, the left-hander accelerated dramatically, targeting the leg side with authority.
He punished Harpreet Brar with consecutive boundaries before taking on Yuzvendra Chahal with two powerful sixes over deep midwicket. Venkatesh also innovated brilliantly against Azmatullah Omarzai, using the scoop and lap effectively to maintain the scoring rate.
Late cameos from Tim David helped RCB collect 65 runs in the final five overs, pushing the total beyond Punjab’s reach.
As has often been the case for Bengaluru this season, Virat Kohli laid the platform with another fluent innings. Kohli struck early boundaries with trademark authority, while Devdutt Padikkal and Jacob Bethell maintained the aggressive tempo during the middle overs.
The defeat leaves Punjab Kings needing favourable results elsewhere to stay alive in the playoff race, while RCB strengthened their momentum heading into the business end of the tournament.
