In a dramatic contest that kept both teams’ hopes alive, Kolkata Knight Riders edged past Lucknow Super Giants in the first Super Over of IPL 2026 at the BRSABV Ekana Stadium on Sunday. With both sides languishing at the bottom of the table, the match delivered high tension and late twists before KKR emerged victorious.
The game went down to the wire after both teams finished level at 155. The turning point came in the final over of regulation play when Mohammed Shami smashed a six off the last ball bowled by Kartik Tyagi, who was defending 16 runs. That blow forced the match into a Super Over — the first of the season.
In the one-over eliminator, Sunil Narine produced a decisive spell, removing Nicholas Pooran and Aiden Markram while conceding just a single run. With minimal pressure, Rinku Singh stepped up and sealed the chase instantly, hitting a boundary off the very first ball to wrap up the contest.
Earlier in the match, Lucknow’s chase never found steady footing despite staying within reach. Wickets fell at regular intervals, preventing momentum from building. Rishabh Pant anchored the innings with a 38-ball 42, but lacked strong support from the other end. Impact substitute Himmat Singh briefly lifted hopes with a quick 19 off 10 balls, including two fours and a six, but his dismissal in the final over left the game hanging in balance.
Kolkata’s innings had its own share of struggles before being rescued by a stunning knock from Rinku Singh. Walking in during a shaky phase, he transformed the innings with a counterattack that shifted the momentum. Rinku hammered four consecutive sixes off Digvesh Rathi in the final over, collecting 26 runs, after already taking 17 off Mohammed Shami earlier. He surged from 53 off 42 deliveries to finish unbeaten on 83 from 51 balls.
The innings came after a collapse triggered by Mohsin Khan, who dismantled KKR’s top order with clever variations. He dismissed Tim Seifert, Ajinkya Rahane, Rovman Powell, Cameron Green, and Anukul Roy to complete a five-wicket haul.
Despite Mohsin’s brilliance, Rinku’s late assault ensured KKR posted a competitive total — one that ultimately proved enough to secure a crucial win and keep their campaign alive.
