Former Indian wicket-keeper bat Dinesh Karthik feels youngsters like Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill can lead India in all the formats in the near future. While Suryakumar Yadav has been given the T20I captaincy duties by the selectors, Rohit Sharma will continue to lead India in ODIs and Test matches.
As Suryakumar Yadav (14 September birthday) is soon going to be 34 whereas Rohit Sharma is 37, the BCCI will keep a close eye on the potential future leaders for the team.
Meanwhile, Gill has been appointed as the vice-captain in the white-ball formats after the T20 World Cup whereas Jasprit Bumrah is Rohit’s deputy in the red-ball version of the game.
Gill also leads Gujarat Titans in the IPL whereas Rishabh Pant has been leading Delhi Capitals in the last few years, barring IPL 2023. Gill also led India to a 4-1 T20I series win against Zimbabwe after the T20 World Cup triumph.
“Two players come straight into my mind who are young, who have the potential, and definitely can lead India in all the formats in the near future. One Rishabh Pant, two Shubman Gill. Both of them are captains in IPL teams and have captained India. I do think in time, they have the chance to become the all format captain for India as well,” Karthik said on Cricbuzz’s AskCB with DK show when asked about “India’s next future captain of all formats.”
Meanwhile, both Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Titans could not qualify for the playoffs of the Indian Premier League in the previous season.
Shubman Gill is also leading Team A in the ongoing Duleep trophy whereas Pant is playing under the captaincy of Abhimanyu Easwaran for Team B. Pant was dismissed after scoring only seven runs after Gill took a brilliant catch, while running back.
