Indian cricketers Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer shattered previous financial records, becoming the most expensive players in the Indian Premier League auction history.
The auction, which commenced on November 24, witnessed intense bidding wars among franchises eager to bolster their squads for the upcoming season.
Rishabh Pant’s Record-Breaking Deal
Rishabh Pant emerged as the top acquisition of the auction. The Lucknow Super Giants secured his services for a staggering ₹27 crore (approximately $3.20 million), setting a new benchmark for player contracts in the IPL.
Pant, who previously captained the Delhi Capitals, was released ahead of this year’s mega auction, making him a prime target for several franchises. The bidding for Pant saw fierce competition, with teams like Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and his former team, Delhi Capitals, vying for his signature. Ultimately, the Super Giants’ substantial bid prevailed, and Pant is anticipated to take on a leadership role within the franchise.
Shreyas Iyer’s Lucrative Contract
Close on Pant’s heels, Shreyas Iyer secured a monumental deal with the Punjab Kings, who acquired him for ₹26.75 crore (approximately $3.17 million).
This contract surpasses the previous record held by Australian pacer Mitchell Starc, who was signed for nearly ₹24.75 crore in the 2024 auction. Iyer, known for his solid middle-order batting and leadership capabilities, is expected to play a pivotal role in the Kings’ strategy for the forthcoming season.
Venkatesh Iyer’s Significant Acquisition
Adding to the list of high-profile signings, all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer was re-acquired by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for ₹23.75 crore (approximately $2.87 million). Iyer, who had previously been instrumental in KKR’s performances, attracted bids from multiple franchises, including Royal Challengers Bangalore and Lucknow Super Giants.
Other Notable Signings
The auction also saw significant investments in other prominent players:
Mitchell Starc’s Reduced Contract
In a surprising development, Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc, who previously held the record for the highest bid, was signed by the Delhi Capitals for ₹11.75 crore (approximately $1.40 million). This marks a significant reduction from his earlier contract.
As teams finalize their rosters, the upcoming season promises heightened competition and excitement for cricket enthusiasts worldwide.
