India’s flamboyant batter Robin Uthappa has decided to hang his boots from all forms of Indian cricket. The veteran batter took to his social media account to share the news on Wednesday. The 36-year-old played 46 ODIs for India in which he scored 934 runs at an average of 25.34.
Uthappa played 13 T20I matches for the national team, scoring 249 runs at 24.9 and a strike rate of 118.01. The right-hander was also part of India’s successful 2007 T20 World Cup campaign.
Uthappa wrote on his Twitter post, “It has been my greatest honour to represent my country and my state, Karnataka. However, all good things must come to an end, and with a grateful heart, I have decided to retire from all forms of Indian cricket. Thank you all.”
Meanwhile, Uthappa made a fine start to his ODI career as he scored a fine knock of 86 runs against England in Indore in 2006. The right-hander batted at the top of the order in the 2007 T20 World Cup but soon lost his spot in the team.
The Karnataka batter was then able to make a return in 2014 and 2015 in the national team. On the other hand, Uthappa has been a consistent performer in the IPL as he has scored 4952 runs in 205 IPL matches, including 27 half-centuries.
Uthappa won the Orange Cap while playing for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014 and played a key role in taking the franchise to glory. Uthappa also played a fine knock for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2021 as he scored 63 runs from 44 balls in the first qualifier against Delhi Capitals.
As Uthappa has retired from all forms of Indian cricket, he will look to play in T20 leagues across the globe. Uthappa was also seen doing commentary stint on India’s tour of Zimbabwe and is also part of ESPN Cricinfo’s expert panel along with Cheteshwar Pujara for the recently concluded Asia Cup.
