Legendary Sunil Gavaskar has predicted that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will score lots of runs in the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa. Rohit and Virat have got all the experience under their belt and they are going to hold the key for the visitors.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were brilliant in the World Cup 2023. Rohit scored 597 runs in 11 matches of the World Cup 2023 at an average of 54.27 and a blistering strike rate of 125.95. The talisman scored three fifties and one century in the ODI showpiece.
On the other hand, Virat Kohli finished the tournament as the highest run-getter with 765 runs in 11 matches at an average of 95.62 and a strike rate of 90.32. Ergo, he was awarded Player of the tournament for his consistent performances. The duo will look to carry their good form against the Proteas in the all-important Test series.
“They are experienced batters, who are coming after playing everywhere, so I expect them to score lots of runs in these two Test matches. Not only because they have got so much talent, but this time around, I think the South African attack does not have that edge,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
Meanwhile, Kohli has scored 719 runs in 14 innings with a remarkable average of 51.36 on the South African soil. On the other hand, Rohit Sharma has aggregated 123 runs at an average of 15.37 and he will look to better his record in tough conditions.
On the other hand, Anrich Nortje has been ruled out of the Test series whereas Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi are also doubtful for the opening Test.
“With the absence of Nortje, with the likely absence of Rabada and Lungi Ngidi, the South African attack looks a little bit short on experience, I am not saying short of class. So I feel these two batters will score lots of runs and help the Indian team post a big score,” Gavaskar said.
The first Test match between India and South Africa will be played at the SuperSport Park, Centurion from December 26.
