Former Indian Test opener Sadagopan Ramesh has questioned Gautam Gambhir’s statement on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Ahead of the ODI series against the West Indies, Gambhir said the veteran duo have been of great support for skipper Shubman Gill.
Ramesh said Gambhir praising Rohit and Kohli is hard to believe, as he doesn’t want the pair to be part of the team, along with outgoing chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
There have been doubts raised about Rohit Sharma’s future in the ODI team but the veteran scored a stunning knock of 138 runs off 110 balls against England in the last game of the series.
Sadagopan Ramesh said on his Instagram handle, “It’s hard to believe Gambhir’s statement that Gill is lucky to have Kohli and Rohit playing under him. Gambhir praising Kohli and Rohit is hard to believe. Ajit Agarkar must be looking sideways at this in surprise. His mind’s voice must be saying to Gambhir, ‘Till now, you didn’t want these two in the team, and you also involved me in this game to finish my chances of an extension. And yet, now you are planning for your extension by saying all this’.”
On the other hand, Gambhir recently admitted that dropping Sanju Samson in the T20I series against England was the toughest call for him as a head coach. However, Ramesh questioned whether Gambhir’s statement should be believed to be true.
“Probably that was, I’ll be honest with you, in two years of my journey, that was the only night I could not sleep. And I told this to Sanju. Because I knew that it was probably the toughest decision in my coaching tenure in a T20 format,” said Gambhir (via the Hindustan Times).
“Gambhir talked about dropping Sanju Samson as the toughest decision that gave him a sleepless night. Honestly, does this look believable? If it is true, then Sanju Samson deserves a massive salute. Because he has ruined the sleep of a person (Gambhir) who has ruined several people’s sleep.”
Samson was dropped from the playing XI after three low scores on the UK tour.
