Perhaps even more intriguing than how Chennai Super Kings perform in IPL 2026, after a season of significant squad changes, is the spotlight surrounding their most high-profile recruit: Sanju Samson.
For over a decade, Samson was synonymous with Rajasthan Royals. Although he was initially signed by Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012, the wicketkeeper-batsman spent virtually his entire IPL career in Jaipur, making his debut for the Royals in 2013 and staying there until last season, barring the two suspended seasons of 2016 and 2017. During that time, Samson amassed more than 4,000 runs to become Rajasthan’s leading run-scorer in the tournament.
So when news broke that Samson had been traded to Chennai Super Kings ahead of the 2026 season, it immediately sparked conversation among fans. Where would he bat in the star-studded CSK line-up? Would he take over wicketkeeping duties from the legendary MS Dhoni? And perhaps most intriguingly, could Samson eventually emerge as Dhoni’s long-term successor as captain?
Those questions have only grown louder following Samson’s extraordinary performance at the recent T20 World Cup. The tournament turned into a defining moment in his international career.
Samson finished as India’s leading run-scorer, totalling 321 runs in just five matches at a blistering strike-rate of 199. What made the feat even more remarkable was the path he took to get there. He had been dropped before the tournament and initially played just once — against Namibia — when Abhishek Sharma missed that game in Delhi.
But fate gave Samson another opportunity.
Recalled for the crucial match against Zimbabwe in Chennai, he helped kickstart India’s innings with a brisk 24 as the team marched towards 256. What followed was the kind of run that even his most loyal supporters had rarely seen.
In three effectively knockout matches, Samson rose to the occasion with remarkable composure. He smashed an unbeaten 97 in a virtual quarter-final against West Indies, followed it with a superb 89 in the semi-final against England, and then produced another 89 in the final against New Zealand to power India to the title.
For a cricketer long regarded as immensely talented but frustratingly inconsistent, it was a defining stretch of performances.
Now, Samson arrives at CSK not only as a marquee signing but also as the toast of India’s World Cup-winning squad. And with five IPL titles already to their name, CSK provide him with a stage unlike any he has experienced before.
The expectations, naturally, are enormous.
The Chennai fan base is among the most passionate in the league, and Samson will step into an environment very different from what he experienced in Jaipur. With an ODI World Cup also looming on the horizon, the upcoming IPL season could be pivotal for his career.
The question now is simple — but fascinating. Can Samson translate his World Cup heroics into instant impact in yellow?
