BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the board wants Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to serve Indian cricket like Sachin Tendulkar. Saikia said the BCCI is keeping a close watch on Sooryavanshi, as the youngster has shown all the skills to go a long way in his career.

Sooryavanshi had hogged the limelight after scoring 776 runs in 16 matches of IPL 2026 at an average of 48.16 and a blistering strike rate of 237.30. Thus, he was awarded the MVP of the tournament.

After getting off to a slow start in his International T20I career against England, Sooryavanshi scored 151 runs in three games against Zimbabwe at an average of 50.33 and a strike rate of 196.10.

The left-hander returned with scores of 92 and 40 in the Duleep Trophy semifinal against Central Zone.

“We want Vaibhav Sooryavanshi or any player of his stature to continue and serve like Sachin Tendulkar did for the country or other players who in the past became legends,” Saikia said.

“So we look at Vaibhav in a very serious manner. He’s monitored from every angle and every step he is taking forward in his international career. The BCCI is taking a very close look at his future.”

Saikia said the goal is to help Sooryavanshi make the most of his talent and deliver at the top stage for a long time.

“We are very cautious that every right step he should take forward so that it should not be a one series or one year wonder,” Saikia added.

Saikia said there are 10-15 players in their target group and CoE’s director of cricket VVS Laxman is keeping a close eye on these players.

“We are looking at all the players, not only Vaibhav’s relevance, but there are about 10–15 players who are in our targeted group,” Saikia said.

“They are constantly monitored by our COE head, VVS Laxman, who is taking keen interest in their future and their training and skill development.”

Sooryavanshi will play the Duleep Trophy final against South Zone.
