Indian captain Shreyas Iyer admitted the bowlers could not execute their plans after a 24-run loss in the fourth T20I against the West Indies at Hyderabad on Wednesday. India concede an above-par score of 247 runs on the board after Iyer elected to bowl first on a relaid Hyderabad pitch.
India was restricted to 223-9 in the run-chase as the Windies leveled the series 2-2. The visitors scored 70 runs in the last five overs as they scored at a run rate of 14.
All the Indian bowlers, barring Prince Yadav, conceded their runs at an economy rate of more than 11.
Iyer said in the post-match presentation, “It all started with the bowling. I think we didn’t execute our line lengths well. And, chasing 250, you have to go in a certain pattern. So, I like the approach when we were chasing, but we couldn’t execute our plans in bowling and that’s where we fell a bit short.”
Meanwhile, Sanju Samson dominated the strike in the Powerplay overs but Iyer dismissed that the lack of strike for Abhishek Sharma went on to hurt India.
He added, “Not really, we were still going 12 an over at that point of time. It’s just that they executed their plan and there was a bit too off from the wicket as well. The ball was kicking a bit and they used the field pretty well. So, credit where it’s due and their execution was spot on.”
Iyer added they are going to adopt the same batting approach in the final game but they would look for better execution.
He concluded, “Getting 220 when we were chasing 250 [248], you can see the approach and attitude of every individual. So, the approach is going to be the same and I feel going forward we don’t have to think much about our batting. But it’s all about execution and having that fresh mindset where you come on that given day.”
The fifth and final match of the series between India and the West Indies will be played at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, on Saturday.
