Former Indian leg-spinner Amit Mishra feels Shubman Gill doesn’t know how to captain the side and he looked clueless as a leader in the IPL. Gill recently led India to 4-1 series win against Zimbabwe after India’s T20 World Cup triumph under Rohit Sharma.
Gill was given the captaincy baton for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024 but the franchise failed to make it to the playoffs, finishing at eighth place in the standings with five wins and seven losses (two no results) in 14 matches.
Meanwhile, GT had made it to the last four in IPL 2022 and 2023 under the captaincy of Hardik Pandya. GT won the championship in IPL 2022 and finished as runners-up in the next season. But they could not keep up the good show under Gill’s leadership.
Mishra said on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast, “Mai Shubman ko captain nahi banaunga, kyonki maine usey IPL me dekha, he doesn’t know ki captaincy kaise karna hai, uske paas captaincy ka idea hi nahi hai. (I would not have made him the captain. You saw the IPL this season, Gill doesn’t know how to captain the side, he is clueless) Just because he is a part of the Indian team, he shouldn’t be made the captain.”
On the other hand, Gill feels captaincy brings the best out of him after leading India to a series win against Zimbabwe. The right-hander also top-scored in the series with 170 runs in five games.
“It (captaincy) is something that I definitely enjoy. I think it brings out the best in me when I am out there because I look to be involved in the game. It is something that really brings out the side of me which I enjoy being on the field.”
After Rohit Sharma’s retirement from T20Is, India has captaincy options like Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah.
