Former Indian fielding coach R Sridhar has put his weight behind Shubman Gill to take over from Rohit Sharma as a leader in ODIs and Test matches. Sridhar, who observed Gill from close quarters during his stint with the team, said the youngster is an all-format player.
Gill has been given the vice-captaincy role in a limited-overs format after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup. The Indian opener also led India to a 4-1 series win against Zimbabwe. Gill led from the front as he top-scored in the series with 170 runs in five games.
Furthermore, Gill was given the captaincy baton for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024 but the franchise failed to make it to the playoffs, finishing at eighth place in the standings with five wins and seven losses (two no results) in 14 matches.
“On current form and going back to the potential they showed in the India-England Test series and even in the ODI games, I think these two are nailing their position in two formats, that is T20Is and Tests. Shubman Gill for me is an all-format player and I think he would be the apprentice to captain Rohit Sharma in Test matches and ODIs. I am sure India will see him as the captain post 2027 World Cup in all formats,” told Hindustan Times.
Meanwhile, Gill scored 73 runs in the two T20Is against Sri Lanka and 51 runs in two ODIs against the hosts.
There is no doubt that Gill has a lot of potential to go a long way in his career and he will look to keep delivering consistent performances.
The third ODI between India and Sri Lanka will be played at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on Wednesday.
