Indian captain Shubman Gill has urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India to arrange 15-day camp before every Test series, reported a BCCI source. Gill wants his team to be fully prepared for the red-ball assignments and wants to leave no stone unturned in the preparation.
India was recently stunned 0-2 by South Africa while playing at home. Gill suffered a neck injury in the opening Test match at Kolkata and could only bat for two deliveries. Rishabh Pant then led in Gill’s absence.
Furthermore, India was whitewashed 0-3 by New Zealand in 2024 and have failed to keep up their home dominance.
“Gill was very clear that the team needed better preparation before going into a Test series. There was an issue with the itinerary this season where the team didn’t have much time to prepare. Gill recommended to the Board that it would be ideal if there were 15-day red-ball camps before a Test series,” a BCCI source told TOI.
The source added that Gill is showing assertive qualities and wants to leave a mark on the team.
“Gill is showing assertive qualities now. He is presenting his vision to the selectors and BCCI with a lot more clarity. It augurs well for Indian cricket, as there is a need for a strong captain after Rohit Sharma. The Test and ODI teams are Gill’s. It is important for him to have a bigger say,” the source added.
Meanwhile, Gill was not included in India’s T20 World Cup squad. Ishan Kishan has been picked as a backup wicketkeeper and opener in the squad after he scored 517 runs in 10 matches of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Gill will be seen in action while leading India in the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand.
