SRH vs LSG IPL 2025: Sunrisers pose a tough challenge for Lucknow, promising an exciting battle at Uppal

    March 27, 2025

Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Lucknow Super Giants is set to be a thrilling showdown. Sunrisers’ first two home games provide a big advantage to the season. On paper, they appear to be the strongest team in the competition. At this stage, every team is still assessing their squad composition and evaluating acquisitions from the Mega Auction. While a team may look formidable on paper, the real challenge lies in how they perform on the field.

SRH look impressive—not just on paper, but in the field as well. One of their key advantages is continuity from last season, with several core players and the captaincy remaining unchanged. Their top five batting lineup is among the best in the competition, if not the best, provided they stay fit and consistent. The opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head is outstanding, while the addition of Ishan Kishan has already proven to be a brilliant move.

Everyone knows he’s a top-class player, but scoring a century right from the start—and in such style—is the perfect way to kick off both his campaign and the team’s. With Nitish Kumar Reddy at four and Heinrich Klaasen in the middle order, they have flexibility to adjust based on match situations. Looking at their batting lineup, it’s clear they have incredible depth—breaking through it will be a tough challenge, even in conditions different from the high-scoring pitches they enjoy at home in Hyderabad.

For me, the bowling attack is even more crucial. When assessing teams, I first look at their bowling strength—especially how they handle flat pitches. With Mohammed Shami, Adam Zampa, and Pat Cummins in the mix, they already look formidable, and adding Harshal Patel is a brilliant move.

Shami provides early breakthroughs, Zampa controls the middle overs, Harshal is a reliable finisher, and Cummins brings balance throughout. They have all bases covered—pace, spin, experience, and quality at every stage of the innings.

When you combine their powerful batting lineup with such a well-rounded bowling attack, they look like a serious title contender. It wouldn’t be surprising to see them go at least as far as last year—if not one step better.

This is a team with real “wow” factor. Even if they lose their top two—Abhishek and Head—early, which hasn’t happened often, their batting depth ensures they can recover quickly. Simply put, they are an incredibly strong side.

LSG will have to bring their absolute best to overcome them. I covered their first game, and it’s clear that injuries to their bowling attack have been a setback, making their challenge even tougher.

With Mohsin out, Shardul Thakur stepped in as a solid replacement and delivered a strong performance—a smart signing for them.

However, LSG is currently missing several key players, including Avesh Khan, Mayank Yadav, and Akash Deep, which forced them to rely heavily on spin, effectively using four spinners as impact options. Digvesh Rathi is a promising addition, while Ravi Bishnoi has proven his quality over the years.

Their bowling strength will largely depend on player availability in the coming games, particularly in the pace department. Shamar Joseph could be a viable option, possibly even replacing Markram in the lineup.

LSG boasts a top-quality batting lineup, with standout players like Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran delivering strong performances. Adding David Miller is a smart move—not only is he a proven IPL performer, but he also addresses one of LSG’s key weaknesses: chasing targets.

Miller is an astute reader of the game, and having him at No. 5 or 6 strengthens their middle order significantly. Historically, LSG has performed better when batting first, largely because they’ve struggled with run chases. With Miller in the mix, they now have a reliable finisher who can help turn that around.

Markram is undoubtedly a high-quality player and offers a useful spin option if needed. However, the real focus for LSG remains on their captain.

He had a tough outing in the last match, failing to contribute with the bat, but there are still positives to take from the performance. Despite the setback, LSG was in a winning position and should have closed out the game.

LSG had multiple opportunities to close out the game, especially after a strong start with the ball, reducing the opposition to three down. They will likely feel they should have sealed the win, particularly after a missed stumping proved costly.

Still, there are plenty of positives to take from the match. It’s a tough team to fully assess at this stage, as several key players are yet to return. If they can get their full squad back in the coming games, they should be a much stronger side. Despite the loss, they can view this as a learning experience with valuable takeaways.

Things won’t get any easier for LSG as they now face arguably the strongest team in the competition. They’ll need to regroup quickly and bring their best game.

Fortunately, they have players capable of turning a match on its head. Pooran at No. 3 is a game-changer, and the matchups in this contest—Pooran at three, Klaassen at five, and Kishan at three—feature some of the best talents in the tournament. Their performances could be decisive in shaping the outcome.

Watching these top-tier players go head-to-head on a flat pitch promises to be a thrilling contest. Mitch Marsh looked in sublime touch in the last game—his timing was impeccable, and he seemed in great rhythm.

Adding to the excitement is Rishabh Pant, who appears to be rediscovering his best form. Ideally, he stays at No. 4 or even moves up the order, where he can make a bigger impact. With his immense talent and natural flair, he has the potential to be a game-changer.

All things considered, this shapes up to be a tough challenge for LSG, but an exciting battle nonetheless. LSG is packed with quality from top to bottom, making this an exciting contest to watch.
