Former Indian batter Subramaniam Badrinath questioned Shivam Dube’s place after England registered a comprehensive 56-run win against India at Rose Bowl, Southampton on Saturday. Dube bowled a solitary over in the last game of the series and picked two wickets but conceded 22 runs. The left-handed batter was dismissed after scoring 14 runs off 10 deliveries. In the fourth T20I, Dube had managed 22 runs off 23 balls.
It has been noted that Dube has been found wanting against the fast bowlers and struggles a bit against short-pitch deliveries. Dube could only manage 85 runs in five matches of the series at an average of 21.25 and a strike rate of 130.77.
Furthermore, Dube failed to judge the ball when Harry Brook was on only three runs. The England captain went on to score 95 runs and the drop proved costly for India.
Badrinath said on his YouTube Channel, “How can he remain in the team going forward? He is dropping sitters and being called an all-rounder, he is bowling the 19th over and getting smashed. They are also losing now which isn’t helping his cause. Krunal Pandya might be a good addition instead.”
Badrinath questioned the selectors and team management for dropping Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson. While SKY was dropped for the UK tour, Samson played only two T20Is against England.
“They’ve removed the World Cup-winning captain and the Player of the Tournament. Then why are similar yardsticks not used for other players? It should apply to an Axar Patel and Shivam Dube. Even Axar hasn’t been in the best of forms. It feels like some players fit the system and get more chances. But it’s not clear as to what that system is and why they are getting extra chances. Is there something the captain or coach knows that we don’t?,” said Badrinath (via the aforementioned source).
India and England will next take on each other in a three-match ODI series, starting Tuesday at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
