After Suryakumar Yadav was sacked as India’s T20I captain and was also dropped from the squad, the Mumbai batter has unfollowed Mumbai Indians on Instagram after the conclusion of the ongoing IPL 2026. Interestingly, SKY has also deleted posts related to the franchise from his Instagram handle.
The only post SKY has on his Instagram, related to Mumbai Indians, is a picture with former Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni and former Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma, which was uploaded five weeks ago in IPL 2026.
It is worth mentioning that Mumbai Indians are currently following Suryakumar Yadav on the photo-sharing platform. This sudden development has raised questions about SKY’s future with the franchise. SKY was signed by MI ahead of the 2018 season for INR 3.2 crore and has been an integral part of the team for almost nine years.
The right-hander has played a key role in the success of the franchise over the years and has delivered for them while batting in the middle order. The 35-year-old is the second-highest run-getter for MI, scoring 4020 runs in 125 innings at a strike rate of 151.24.
However, SKY didn’t have a great run in IPL 2026, managing only 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.77 and a strike rate of 147.54. Thus, it played a role in his omission from India’s T20I squad. Before IPL 2026, SKY led India to T20 World Cup glory, but barring scoring a fine knock of 84 runs, he could not do much of notice in the marquee event.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar admitted they took a tough call in dropping SKY and replacing him with Shreyas Iyer.
He said in the press conference, “With regards to Surya, obviously, it’s a tough one, having just won the World Cup, but as it happens, after most World Cups, we try and reassess what the best way forward is. Partly his own form, but also looking at the next two-year cycle, or a little bit more than two years now till the next World Cup, we thought this was the best way forward. Like I said, Shreyas is a well-deserving candidate.”
On Saturday, SKY scored 48 runs off just 24 balls against SoBo Mumbai Falcons in the ongoing Mumbai T20. Furthermore, the veteran batter smashed 72 runs off just 36 balls against MSC Maratha Royals on Monday.
