India’s former batter Robin Uthappa feels there is a lack of sense of security among players in the Indian team. Uthappa feels there is a lot of chop and change in the Indian team, which has made players insecure regarding their place in the side.
Uthappa feels when it happens, players play to save their place in the team rather than for the team. India has given ample opportunities to young players in the recent past and they have tried multiple combinations. Players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul have been consistently rested from the T20I series after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup.
“I think there is a lack of sense of security among the players in the team. There have been constant changes in the team for a long time, when a player does not feel safe, he always remains with the mindset of saving his place in the team,” Uthappa was quoted as saying by news agency PTI from the United Arab Emirates.
On the other hand, Uthappa also questioned the team’s selection in the recent past. Kuldeep Yadav took eight wickets in the first Test match against Bangladesh but the wrist spinner was dropped in the second match against the Tigers as the team played Jaydev Unadkat in the final XI. Uthappa feels it doesn’t send a good message.
“Kuldeep was ‘Player of the Match’ in first Test against Bangladesh and he was out of the team for the next match; it doesn’t give (send) a good message,” Uthappa told PTI.
“Yes, you can explain things to Kuldeep once but this gives (sends) a wrong message to the young players that even after getting the ‘Player of the Match’, your place in the team is not assured,” he added.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that India has shortlisted 20 players for the ODI World Cup, which will be played later in the year.
