Tilak Varma produced a composed unbeaten knock under pressure as Mumbai Indians defeated Punjab Kings by six wickets in a high-scoring IPL clash at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala on Thursday.
Chasing a challenging target of 201, Mumbai appeared to be struggling with the asking rate climbing rapidly in the final overs. Punjab Kings were firmly in control with Mumbai needing 72 runs from the last five overs. However, Tilak turned the game around with a fearless counterattack to keep Mumbai’s chase alive and eventually seal victory with ease.
The momentum shifted dramatically in the 16th over when Tilak and Sherfane Rutherford attacked Yuzvendra Chahal for 20 runs. Tilak’s inventive switch-hit boundary and Rutherford’s aggressive strokeplay suddenly injected belief into the Mumbai camp.
Tilak continued the assault in the following over, collecting 16 runs in boundaries. He smashed a towering six over midwicket before driving twice straight past the bowler. Will Jacks further eased the pressure with timely sixes at the start of the penultimate and final overs.
With only eight runs required from the last three deliveries, Tilak calmly finished the chase with consecutive boundaries to remain unbeaten and guide Mumbai home.
Earlier, Ryan Rickelton had given Mumbai the ideal start with a quickfire 48 off just 23 balls. The left-hander capitalised on loose bowling from Marco Jansen and Xavier Bartlett, repeatedly targeting the leg side boundary. His aggressive approach helped Mumbai maintain the required pace early in the innings before Punjab fought back with crucial wickets.
Punjab had earlier posted 200 on the board after recovering from a dramatic middle-order collapse. Azmatullah Omarzai played a vital role with a late attacking cameo that rescued the hosts from a difficult position.
Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur was instrumental in restricting Punjab’s innings, finishing with impressive figures of four for 39. His disciplined hit-the-deck bowling triggered a collapse as Punjab lost six wickets for just 33 runs during the middle overs.
Prabhsimran Singh had earlier provided Punjab with momentum after surviving two chances. The opener punished leg-spinner Raghu Sharma with consecutive slog-swept sixes and looked set for a bigger score before Shardul dismissed him and captain Shreyas Iyer in quick succession.
Punjab’s innings threatened to fall apart completely before Omarzai launched a late counterattack. He struck boundaries off Shardul and Corbin Bosch before taking 18 runs from a Deepak Chahar over to push Punjab to the 200-run mark. Useful late contributions from Vishnu Vinod and Xavier Bartlett added valuable runs in the closing overs.
Despite posting a competitive total, Punjab Kings once again failed to defend a strong position, suffering their fifth consecutive defeat and dealing a major blow to their playoff hopes. Mumbai, meanwhile, kept their campaign alive with a timely and confidence-boosting victory.
