With every passing IPL season, the question on Dhoni’s future with Chennai Super Kings continues to linger in the press and among the professionals attached to the sport. An ageing MS Dhoni stunned the world and dispensed with his critics once again by leading his side CSK to the fourth title in their history after yet another glorious and consistent IPL season.
What made the recent success even more special is that Chennai Super Kings had a disastrous time in UAE last season and finished second from bottom. Making a remarkable comeback, the Yellow Army went all the way this time around. Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has urged Dhoni to play another season with CSK before choosing retirement.
Sehwag also lavished praise on Chennai Super Kings and mentioned that their consistency and legacy is unmatchable. MS Dhoni who has been with the team since 2008 (except for the years they were suspended) has carved out a unique legacy with CSK that nobody can come close to imitating. In the post-match press conference, Harsha Bhogle quizzed Dhoni about the same. On being asked whether he can be proud of the legacy he has left behind with CSK, Dhoni was quick to quip that he ‘still hasn’t left,’ hinting that he might appear in the iconic yellow jersey next season as well.
“It’s a phenomenal team. No one in Team India could beat Dhoni’s legacy and hopefully, it would be difficult for any other captain to do the same for CSK. I feel he has one more year left in him for Chennai. He must play next season and then retire,” said Sehwag while speaking to Cricbuzz.
The hard-hitting opener also discussed that the legacy of a captain is usually defined by the number of titles won under him. MS Dhoni who has won a treble of ICC trophies with the Indian cricket team has also achieved tremendous success in the IPL. He has played nine finals in the Indian Premier League and matching him is going to be a tough ask for anyone.
“The legacy of the captain is known for the number of trophies he has won. And this captain [MS Dhoni] has won four titles and played 9 finals. So, to match him up will be an uphill task for any other skipper. Rohit Sharma is indeed close but to play nine season finals, he needs more time,” added Sehwag,
