Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has played a key role in getting the best out of Abhishek Sharma and he has been a perfect mentor for the left-hander. Singh said he wanted to give back to the game, which has given him everything in life.

The former left-hander added he wanted to help Punjab players improve their game, which would eventually help Indian cricket. Abhishek has been one of Yuvraj’s brightest students and stayed at the top of the ICC T20I batting rankings for a long time. 

He smashed a blistering knock of 82 runs off just 32 balls against Afghanistan on Sunday and backed it up with another impressive knock of 39 runs off 19 balls in the second game.

Yuvraj Singh said in an interview with Cricbuzz, “My kids were growing up. So I took a bit of time off. And whatever time I could spend, I spent on my state guys. So I want my state cricket to improve. I want my players to improve. So that was the whole point – giving back what the game has given me.”

He added, “And I enjoy working one-on-one with younger guys. Because I feel that, you know, when you are playing domestic and you want to get into IPL teams or international teams, there is a lot of confusion around your game. I have gone through those stages of confusion.”

The 2011 World Cup-winning hero said helping young players with their mindset was his main goal.

Yuvraj concluded, “So, you know, help them more with their mindset. You know, talking to them. I feel there is a time when players fail when they come to international cricket. I feel a lot of emphasis has gone into talking to them about, “Do this and do that. Why are you failing?” But I feel that the important thing is that we are not talking to the guys and understanding what their mindset is. What do they think about the game? Because I think I also, at some stage, felt that I also needed to talk to someone.”

Yuvraj is expected to take the batting coach role for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2027.
