Former Indian Test opener Wasim Jaffer reckons rookie fast bowler Mayank Yadav overdid the short ball in the fourth T20I against the West Indies after the hosts suffered a 24-run loss on Wednesday. Yadav returned with expensive figures of 0-52 in his quota of four overs, including six wides.
The fast bowler from Delhi, who has been consistently bowling around the 145 kmph mark in the ongoing series, also tried a few slow balls, which didn’t work against the West Indies batters
Yadav conceded only three runs in the first over of the innings, but he was taken to the cleaners in his next overs.
Wasim Jaffer said on his YouTube Channel, “He overdid the short ball. There were five wides too when he tried to bowl a short ball. It looked like they were expecting it, and they got a kick-start with the 20-run over. We did not bowl the way we should have with the new ball. The short ball was overused, especially by Mayank Yadav.”
Jaffer praised Sanju Samson for his impressive knock of 56 runs off 23 balls but acknowledged that Abhishek Sharma could not get going as he didn’t get enough strike in the Powerplay overs.
Jaffer concluded, “Sanju batted brilliantly. Unfortunately, he got out; otherwise, he rarely gets out after scoring 50-55. Sanju gave us the momentum we needed in the powerplay, but unfortunately, Abhishek could not kick on. Abhishek likes to have the strike in the powerplay.”
Abhishek could only manage 29 runs off 24 balls as he failed to bat at his best in the last game. The fifth and final match of the series between India and the West Indies will be played at M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, on Saturday.
