Former Indian Test opener Wasim Jaffer has opined that Delhi Capitals’ batting has been a hit and miss in the ongoing season and they must bring their best at the business end of the tournament. Jaffer reckons DC have not recovered from the setback when they could not defend an above-par score of 265 runs against Punjab Kings.
On Tuesday, DC managed 155-7 after electing to bat first against Chennai Super Kings on the tricky pitch on their home turf at Delhi. Tristan Stubbs and Sameer Rizvi scored 38 and 40 runs respectively but the rest of the batters could not deliver.
Eventually, they suffered an eight-wicket loss against Sanju Samson scored 87 runs off 52 balls.
Wasim Jaffer said on his YouTube Channel, “I am a bit disappointed with DC because on one side you scored 250 and 255 in matches, and you still lost those games. It feels like they have not recovered from that setback. After that, they got all out for 75, and today they scored 155. Somewhere, when the tournament reaches the business end, DC should start improving and stepping up their game, like other teams are doing.”
Jaffer said DC should have come up with a better batting performance against CSK.
He added, “DC had won the toss and decided to bat first because they felt the pitch was a bit tricky and might slow down later, but that didn’t happen. 155 was a very low score. The batting should have been better. Sameer Rizvi and Tristan Stubbs built a small partnership, but it wasn’t enough. I feel they should have scored 175 to 180; then they could have put Chennai under some pressure.”
The former domestic giant questioned DC’s tactics of demoting a batter like Ashutosh Sharma. Sharma batted at number eight after Sameer Rizvi played as an Impact Sub but the former played a cameo of 5-ball 14.
Jaffer concluded, “Again, I found the tactics a bit strange, like playing Karun Nair. Ashutosh Sharma had won you the last match brilliantly, but he did not get to face many balls in this game, so I am a bit surprised with Delhi’s tactics. You also ended up with a very low score and did not utilize your best batter, Ashutosh Sharma, properly. He did not get enough balls to play. Because of that, you lost an impact substitute opportunity.”
Delhi Capitals will next take on Kolkata Knight Riders at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi, on Friday.
