Former Indian Test opener Wasim Jaffer has urged Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to remain calm when he is on the field amid the 2026 tri series against Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A. Sooryavanshi, who has hogged the limelight in the last two months for his pyrotechnics in IPL 2026, was involved in an altercation with Vishen Halambage.
After Sri Lanka A won the Super Over, the home team players celebrated aggressively in front of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Suryansh Shedge. During the customary post-match handshake, Halambage reportedly told Sooryavanshi. “Go home. This is not the IPL.”
Sooryavanshi then lost his cool and shoved the Sri Lankan all-rounder, forcing the other players to come in between to stop the fight.
“I feel Vaibhav must learn this. He is playing with a lot of hype and because he has a name now, people will try to provoke him and go against him. He should not retaliate this soon and not at all get physical. I am not saying it may have been his fault. Maybe some of the Sri Lankan players told him something or whatever. But he still needs to understand that being physical is not acceptable no matter what. He needs to control his temper. This should not happen again and you do not want to be in the news for the wrong reason. He is a role model for many young players so he needs to see all this. He will live and learn,” Wasim Jaffer said on his YouTube channel.
Jaffer said Sooryavanshi needs to control his anger at the top level and cited Sachin Tendulkar’s example, who remained cool during his long career.
“I feel he needs to control his temper a bit. You cannot react this soon. You have Sachin as a great role model with a similar journey. You never saw anything like this with him. Vaibhav is a fast learner and I am sure his guardians and parents and coaches working with him will be speaking with him,” the former India batter stated.
The former domestic giant said as long as the players don’t cross the line and get personal, any kind of verbal battles are fine.
“As long as you don’t cross the line and get personal, all this is fine. A bit of it should be there too as the game is at such a high intensity. It tests your mental strength as well along with your skills. But you have to make sure you do not cross the line,” he said.
Sooryavanshi was fined 50% of his match-fee and was handed two demerit points for his aggressive action.
