Former Indian Test opener Wasim Jaffer has shed light on Ajit Agarkar’s controversial exit ahead of the white-ball series against the West Indies. Agarkar’s reign will end on October 4 and he will not extend his contract. 

Agarkar also decided to pass on the ODI captaincy baton from Rohit Sharma to Shubman Gill. According to reports, Agarkar’s selection committee wanted India to move on from Rohit Sharma but the BCCI backed the veteran opener.

Thus, there were differences between the selection committee and the BCCI over the player’s handling, which is leading to Agarkar’s exit.

“It is important for everyone to be on the same page. When one individual’s opinion becomes stronger, then it is a problem, be it the head coach, captain, or chairman of the selectors. Somewhere, you need to balance it out. Our Indian public is also emotional about big players. They get very sentimental. I am sure Agarkar would have a thought process for the betterment. But you need to balance these things out with the captain, coach, and everyone. You feel that if things are not going as per your opinion, it is better to move away. Maybe it was that. But these are speculations,” Wasim Jaffer said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Jaffer added that India would need an experienced batter like Rohit Sharma in the ODI World Cup.

“In Rohit’s case, if he is playing, he will have eyes on the 2027 World Cup, and you need that experience. I said this again in Surya’s case as well. You removed him right after the World Cup. These things could have been handled better. Even Shami’s case. He still has to prove himself. This is saddening,” Wasim Jaffer reflected.

Rohit will be seen in action in the ODI series against the West Indies, starting September 27.
